About - Ageism is a protected characteristic and so forms an important part of any discussion about Equality Diversity and Inclusion. However, ageism is a largely invisible and normalised prejudice. This workshop will raise awareness of how ageism affects those in middle and old age and the impacts it has on health and well-being. The workshop will pique your curiosity about ageism and inspire you to see ageing differently..

Workshop content - Join our training workshop on the impacts and implications of ageism in the workplace with Dr Emma Kirkby Geddes. The workshop will cover the following elements.

  1. Integrating Ageism into Workplace Equality and Inclusion - Explore the significance of ageism as a protected characteristic in the workplace, emphasizing its role in fostering a diverse and inclusive environment compliant with Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) policies.

  2. Identifying and Addressing Workplace Ageism - Uncover subtle biases and stereotypes contributing to age-related discrimination within the workplace. Equip participants with the skills to identify and address these prejudices to create a more equitable work environment.

  3. Mitigating Health and Well-being Impacts at Work - Examine the tangible effects of workplace ageism on the health and well-being of employees. Understand how discriminatory attitudes can impact job satisfaction, mental health, and overall workplace morale.

  4. Creating Awareness and Fostering Inclusive Workplace Cultures -   Develop workplace-specific strategies to raise awareness about ageism and challenge assumptions within professional settings. Encourage a culture where colleagues question stereotypes and contribute to an inclusive and respectful workplace.

  5. Inspiring Positive Age Dynamics in Professional Environments - Foster a positive perspective on aging in the workplace by inspiring a culture that values the diverse experiences and contributions of employees of all ages. Explore the benefits of an age-friendly workplace that appreciates the strengths each individual brings to the team.

About Dr Emma Kirkby Geddes

Dr Emma Kirkby-Geddes

Is an experienced therapist specialising in Positive Ageing

Emma (she/her) has over 10 years’ experience of working as a therapist. She specializes in behaviour change for people living with and affected by life changing injury, chronic health and pain conditions and life transition.  She is experienced in delivering Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and draws upon her training as a mindfulness instructor in her work with clients.  Emma has a PhD in Positive Psychology and an MSc in Health Psychology and is also a Chartered Health Psychologist. Her research interests include Positive Ageing – purpose in life and eudaimonic well-being for living well in middle age and later life and Chronic loneliness and the role of experiential avoidance.
